Serial killer Levi Bellfield will be questioned by detectives as part of a double murder probe. The 58-year-old, who is serving multiple whole-life orders at HMP Frankland, reportedly confessed to the murders of Lin and Megan Russell in 1996.
Lin Russell, 45, and her six-year-old daughter, Megan, were bludgeoned to death with a hammer while walking home along a country lane in Chillenden, Kent, on July 9, 1996. Ms Russell’s older daughter, nine-year-old Josie, was also severely injured in the attack but survived. It has now been revealed that officials from the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) plan to quiz Bellfield over the murders.
Michael Stone was convicted of the murders in 1998 and sentenced to life behind bars. The 66-year-old was found guilty despite no forensic evidence linking him to the crime scene.
He recently gave a fresh DNA sample to the CCRC, and there are growing concerns about his conviction. Meanwhile, Bellfield, who is in prison for the murders of Milly Dowler, 13, Marsha McDonnell, 19, and 22-year-old Amélie Delagrange, as well as the attempted murder of Kate Sheedy, reportedly confessed to the killings of Lin and Megan Russell in a four-page document.
Bellfield said: “I was wearing bright yellow Marigold washing-up gloves and holding a hammer in my right hand. In my car, I had a screwdriver, a lock knife, a hammer, yellow Marigold gloves and a very long black bootlace.
“My first intention was to just attack Lin, but I quickly changed my mind due to the screams and was worried she would fight back given the children were with her. I approached Lin and held her right arm tight.”
However, he reportedly retracted the confession before admitting the attacks in a further signed statement in 2023. Officials from the CCRC will now visit Bellfield at HMP Frankland, in County Durham, over the following weeks, according to The Sun.
A source said: “They want to ask him why he was in Kent and why he has retracted confessions in the past.”
Bellfield committed his crimes across Southwest London and Surrey between 2002 and 2004. He stalked his victims before ambushing them with weapons.
