An emergency safety alert has been issued for 69,442 people across 35,650 households in Amakusa City, Kumamoto Prefecture, following the powerful earthquake.
The alert was reported by Japan’s disaster information service NERV on X, which said it had been issued because of the earthquake warning.
Residents are being urged to take immediate steps to protect themselves.
