Toronto Blue Jays World Series tickets among the priciest — ever

Toronto Blue Jays ticket prices are soaring and they’re unlikely to improve, with this year’s World Series quickly becoming one of the priciest — ever.

The Blue Jays are facing off against the Los Angeles Dodgers for Game 6 of the World Series on Friday, with huge fanfare trailing them. Dubbed “Canada’s team,” the Blue Jays haven’t won a World Series since 1993 and have largely been considered the underdogs against L.A. They’re leading 3-2 in the World Series after a big win on Wednesday.

But getting tickets to Friday’s game has been near impossible — and it’s only getting worse.

Game 6 prices are averaging more than $2,000 US, or about $2,800 Cdn, and a potential Game 7 could cost nearly $3,000 US, or about $4,200 Cdn, on the resale market, according to data from Victory Live, a technology and analytics company that tracks verified secondary-market transactions.

“Daily trends show that Game 6 average prices have climbed each day since Tuesday,” a Victory Live media release says.

So it’s unsurprising that diehard baseball fans and playoff bandwagoners alike have voiced major disappointment. Some reports have even declared this year’s World Series the most expensive ever sporting event in Canada.

At the time of writing, the cheapest ticket available on Ticketmaster was $1,462.50 for a single spot in the Rogers Centre outfield district, while the cheapest ticket available on StubHub was about $1,600.

According to Victory Live, Game 6 prices are trailing the resell average for last year’s Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour shows at Rogers Centre, which averaged at $2,320 US. If the Jays and Dodgers meet at Game 7, though, ticket prices could surpass that, the data shows.

Jays fans’ spirits are soaring ahead of tonight’s game and the prospect of the World Series title coming back to Canada. CBC’s Clara Pasieka has the reaction from fans.

The sky-high prices have even inspired Ontario Premier Doug Ford to speak out, promising to look into the issue.

“My personal opinion … they’re gouging the people,” he said earlier this month. “When you have one player in the market that controls the tickets, that’s not right for the people.”

Notably, Ford’s own government scrapped part of a law in 2019 that would have limited ticket resale prices to 50 per cent above face value.
