    Published on
    December 24, 2025

Sri Lanka has launched widespread special holiday transport services with the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) and Sri Lanka Railways rolling out additional buses and train services to meet sharply rising travel demand during the festive season. This initiative responds to peak year‑end holiday travel needs and aims to ensure smooth, affordable, and efficient transport options for both domestic and international travellers exploring Sri Lanka’s cultural, coastal and hill country destinations. The move enhances travel convenience and connectivity during the holiday period.

Country Context and Travel Season Overview

This news pertains to Sri Lanka, where the transport authorities have prepared special seasonal arrangements to facilitate holiday travel across the island. Sri Lanka’s festive calendar at year‑end includes Christmas, New Year and seasonal holidays, driving high public travel volumes across regions. Tourism in Sri Lanka continues to grow, with global visitors drawn to cultural heritage sites, beaches, wildlife and scenic train journeys such as the Kandy‑Ella route. Government transport initiatives complement this travel demand.

    Special Bus Services by SLTB

The Sri Lanka Transport Board has deployed 107 additional buses operating between December 24 and December 27 to accommodate increased passenger flow during the holiday period. These buses support routes from Colombo to major regions including Gampaha, Kalutara, Ruhuna, Uva, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Rajarata, Eastern, North Western, Sabaragamuwa and Northern provinces.

Special services will operate at regular intervals and also include extended late‑night runs, with routes often scheduled at two‑hour gaps to allow flexible travel for tourists and residents alike. The SLTB has also arranged police security at key stops including Colombo and Gunasinghepura bus stands to ensure safer travel.

Extra Train Services by Sri Lanka Railways

Sri Lanka Railways has introduced special trains to coincide with the festive travel rush. According to official notices, additional services include an express train from Maradana to Matara on 24 December 2025, which returns from Matara to Colombo Fort on 29 December. The Colombo Fort‑Kankesanthurai Intercity train is also scheduled to run on 25 and 28 December, offering enhanced connectivity for long‑distance travellers.

These extra rail services aim to respond to elevated passenger demand, ensuring holidaymakers can reach key tourist hubs such as Matara and Jaffna with greater ease. Trains on scenic routes are particularly popular with visitors looking to experience Sri Lanka’s landscapes from the rail network.

How the Services Support Holiday Travel

The holiday season sees families, solo travellers and international visitors journeying throughout Sri Lanka. Longer distances between Colombo and regional destinations normally involve crowded services during peak periods. The additional buses and trains reduce congestion by expanding capacity.

For international travellers arriving in Colombo intending to explore Sri Lanka’s hill country, cultural triangle or coastal regions, these special services offer practical and economic ways to connect between cities without costly private transport.

    Benefits for Travellers

    Improved Connectivity
Travellers benefit from extended transport options covering more regions, including rural and coastal destinations that are traditionally popular during festive breaks. This makes exploring national landmarks, beaches and World Heritage Sites more seamless.

    Reduced Congestion and Wait Times
Additional buses and trains help shorten wait times and relieve pressure on usual services, especially on busy routes between Colombo and tourist centres like Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Jaffna.

    Safety and Convenience
By operating more scheduled services with security arrangements at bus terminals, travellers can expect greater convenience and safety during busy travel days, reducing the stress associated with peak season transport.

    Cost‑Effective Travel
Public transport remains one of the most cost‑effective ways to travel within Sri Lanka. By enhancing service frequency and avoid overbooked trains or buses, travellers can manage their holiday budgets more efficiently.

    Practical Travel Tips

    Advance Planning Recommended
Given high demand during the festive period, travellers are advised to plan ahead and arrive early at major stations and bus depots. Booking seats where possible and checking schedules before departure can prevent delays.

    Carry Travel Documents
International visitors using public transport are encouraged to carry identification and travel documents, as ticket checks and boarding regulations apply.

    Check Local Service Updates
Seasonal transport services can change based on demand and weather. Travellers should check announcements from Sri Lanka Railways and SLTB for real‑time updates or hotline assistance where available.

    Potential Disadvantages for Travellers

    Crowding on Popular Routes
Despite added services, popular corridors may still experience crowding due to high seasonal travel. Flexible travel times can help mitigate discomfort.

    Unpredictable Weather Impact
Holiday travel in December can be affected by weather disruptions in tropical regions, which may delay services. Travellers should allow extra time in their itineraries.

    Language and Navigation Challenges
International travellers unfamiliar with local languages might find navigation challenging. Using mobile translation tools and assistance at major stations can help.

The SLTB and Sri Lanka Railways have launched special holiday transport services timed with the festive travel rush, deploying extra buses and trains to meet seasonal demand. For travellers, especially those exploring Sri Lanka’s cultural, scenic and coastal attractions, these enhanced services provide improved connectivity, convenience and cost‑effective options. While high travel volumes and weather conditions remain considerations, the expanded transport network enhances the overall experience of holiday travel across the island. The initiative reflects Sri Lanka’s commitment to supporting both domestic movement and tourism flow during peak holiday periods.
