She’s not gonna write you a love song, but she’ll star in a documentary. IndieWire can exclusively share the first trailer for “Sara Bareilles: Good Grief,” a new documentary following the celebrated singer-songwriter during the recording process for her latest album.
Best known for her 2007 hit “Love Song,” Bareilles has sold over three million albums across her career. A two-time Grammy winner, Bareilles is also known for writing the music behind the hit musical “Waitress,” as well as her performance in the comedy series “Girls5eva.”
Directed by Josh Alexander, “Good Grief” follows Bareilles as she begins recording on her seventh studio album of the same name, which is set to be released on August 28. The movie captures her collaborative effort with friends and loved ones as she makes the record, which she describes in the trailer as “about loss, and transition, and change, and what we let go of.” The film also explores the inspiration behind the album, including her friend’s diagnosis with lung cancer in 2019.
“From the moment Sara invited me to come film her and some close friends working on her first new album in 7 years, I knew I was in for something magical,” Alexander said in a statement. “I just never could have known how truly nourishing and life-changing the week would be for all of us who were lucky enough to be there to experience it and capture it. I’m just overjoyed that audiences will now get a chance to see this tender film in theaters and in community, while also listening to this gorgeous album and hopefully seeing Sara on tour this fall. ”
“The film intimately captures the making of what has turned out to be my most vulnerable and personal project to date, and I’m so proud to share it,” Bareilles said. “It feels like a sister piece to the album, something that makes the music richer and deeper. “Good Grief” comes from Group Effort Films and Naked Edge Films in association with The deNovo Institute. Alexander and Daniel J. Chalfen produce.
